Sedation Options

Many children are unable to cooperate with dental treatment. They may be too young to follow directions, anxious over the procedure, or require extensive treatment. Our staff is trained to provide a caring and compassionate environment to help make your child feel comfortable. In order to ensure your child receives optimal treatment with a minimal amount of discomfort, the dentist may recommend sedation.

Sedation involves the use of mild sedatives to calm an anxious child. The amount and type administered vary depending on the complexity of treatment and the child’s anxiety level.

Our dentists and hygienist are licensed by the state of South Dakota to provide sedation and have received advanced training in the use of nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) and other oral sedatives. Your child’s vital signs will be closely monitored throughout the procedure and they will remain awake but relaxed, able to respond to questions and follow directions.

Sometimes a child may not be able to undergo treatment while awake or with local anesthesia or nitrous oxide. Patients who are especially young, combative, have underlying health issues or require extensive treatment will have an option of general anesthesia in a surgical setting. Rest assured that today’s modern techniques are safe and effective; anesthesia is provided by competent board-certified anesthesia professionals.
